hatching a plan

Last night we were brainstorming with the Tongs, who live one house away from us, the fox living between us. We were trying to figure out how to get rid of this fox. We debated keeping him around, just because he will be a good remedy for the squirrel overpopulation problem in our area. Right now, he's easy to see and keep track of. But as Nancy's yard grows back up this spring, we will have no way of knowing where he is, and that is just kind of scary. And Nancy likes to let a couple of her cats go outside in the summer, so that would not be possible with the thing lurking around.

So here's what we've come up with so far. Catherine's dad is a vet. He can prescribe a tranquilizer for us to put in some food inside a live trap. The fox will eat the food, and go to sleep. Then we will load the trap into the back of a pick-up and drive it out to the country. We'll open the trap and just let it wander out when it wakes up, then go back for the trap later.

However, we probably should run all this by Catherine's dad, the vet. That way he can let us know if there are any major oversights or flaws in this plan.

that sounds like a good idea i think, which helps to not hurt the fox but get him away from the danger zone, and back into a more natural habitat.

Live trap was my first thought. I looked into buying one a few years ago. I forget what for but it was a little pricey. I think in PA you can call the Game Commission to come take care of it. Maybe you guys have something like that you can use.

Good luck.

Or, maybe you could domesticate the monster and let it live in your basement where it can't harm anyone.

uh, having you been watching disovery channel's animal planet???  Just because you wear a ranger outfit in dress up does not mean you are one.....sheeesh Molly.  I would think the city would have some sort of trap they can come and set.  Just remember........the fox was here long before we were.......those houses were ultimately built on his land.....maybe he is just coming back to reclaim what is ritefully (sp) his???  Well not his per sey, he probably isn't that old, but perhaps that was his ancestors land many many years ago before Minneapolis was even there????  Perhaps.

Man, this is one of the funniest sagas I have read in a while. Of course, not living in Minnesota anymore makes it less scary and more funny. I am looking forward to the day when you put this into a book. "The Great Wolf Caper" by the Pipers and the Tongs. Maybe CDG would sell it at conferences? John could write the forward...

Hi Molly,

Christine here. We had foxes in our backyard a couple summer ago and they also freaked me out. Ours were not gray foxes though. Anyway, foxes do live in urban areas and in our case, which is think is kind of typical, they will stay there for a bit, maybe 2 months, and then they should likely move on to another den. They tend to have several dens going at once to confuse predators, and they don't like to stay in one place for too long also because of predators. So, with any luck maybe they will be gone by springtime!

Good luck! :)

All y'all are from PA (most of you commenters anyway)........you should be USED to varmints living right next door.  Am I the only one that is not a wuss around here????  Don't make me fly up there and rangle that furry sucker myself.  I have taken out a few furry creatures in my day......it won't be purrrrty, but I will bring him out alive.  It is like a requirement in PA....aren't you issued a hunting license like your ss# when you are born????  You get the first day of doe and buck off............this fox is WAAAYYYY smaller than that.  You could probably pick him off with a sling shot made out of a rubber band and hit him with a frozen pea.  Stacey
